It is characterized by being a dormant volcano, as testimony of its volcanic past there are two huge cavities called Los Gemelos. It is estimated that its last eruption occurred 1 and a half million years ago.

Located in Puerto Ayora in Santa Cruz, Galapagos, the Charles Darwin Research Station is directed by scientists from various countries involved in studies about the preservation of the flora and fauna of the islands and their environment.

It has a Natural History Interpretation Center and the Fausto Llerena Breeding Center where it is sought to reproduce and breed in captivity the giant tortoises that are in danger of extinction.
